Indications for Clomid use

Many women with infertility are prescribed Clomid treatment course as this is a drug that increases the likelihood of having regular ovulation. Treatment with Clomid, which is based on clomiphene is a widespread and proven means to restore fertility. Clomid treatment is suitable for women who have either irregular ovulation or none at all, including women with polycystic ovary syndrome. Clomid is also used in cases where the causes of infertility are unknown.

Clomid treatment of women with ovulatory dysfunction shows good results. However, its potential for the treatment of male infertility hasn’t been studied well. In Europe and the US, Clomid is sometimes used to treat infertility in men. It is proved that Clomid causes a surge of LH and FSH, which leads to an increase in the number of spermatozoa.

However, there are only data on individual patients, and treatment was conducted only for several months. Judging by the reports of these isolated cases, no side effects were observed in the treatment. But there is an opinion that prolonged therapy with Clomid can cause risks to have a testicular tumor and gynecomastia.

When I can use Clomid?

Clomid is recommended for the treatment of women with ovarian dysfunction. Many women suffer from an inability to get pregnant due to the fact that their ovulation is disturbed. Among women with ovulation problems, there are patients with polycystic ovary syndrome and patients with unknown causes of amenorrhea are distinguished. Clomid should be used only after a full study of the menstrual cycle, when the doctor has determined the cause of the disorder.

So, the drug is used in the following cases:

  • Stimulation of ovulation in women with anovulatory cycle;
  • Elimination of amenorrhea caused by inadequate production of gonadotropin;
  • Treatment of androgen deficiency in men and oligospermia;
  • Diagnosis of the causes of gonadotropic brain function (pituitary).

In addition, Clomid is actively used in bodybuilding and sports to normalize the body’s work on the production of endogenous hormones after the course of steroids. This use is not foreseen by the manufacturers of the drug, but is the result of the personal experience of men involved in building a body. Therefore, few doctors can consult and prescribe a remedy for this purpose.

Most couples are interested in two questions of Clomid treatment success: the probability of ovulation and the likelihood of pregnancy. Preparations for stimulation of ovulation are quite effective: against the background of their admission, 70% of women have ovulation, while the majority – during the first three months of treatment. Among those who have ovulation, 15% -50% become pregnant.

Such wide variation in the success rates of treatment is explained by the impact of all other factors, including the timing of sexual activity relative to the phase of the menstrual cycle, as well as your age and weight, and the motility of the spermatozoa of a partner.

What symptoms require the use of Clomid?

Сlomid is a synthetic non-steroid drug, reminiscent of the structure of estrogen. It is widely used as an ovulatory stimulant. Having a similarity to estrogen, it can bind to estrogen receptors in the hypothalamus. This prevents the hypothalamus from determining “real” estrogen, and the hypothalamus, in turn, causes the pituitary gland to secrete more gonadotropins, such as FSH and LH. FSH and LH stimulate the ovaries, the testes produce more estrogen in women or testosterone in men.

This property of Clomid is widely used in the treatment of women experiencing premature ovarian failure and for the induction of ovulation. However, long-term use of this drug is unsafe, since it increases the risk of developing ovarian cancer.

Whether it is possible to accept Clomid at a problem with hormones?

Clomid is a potent medicine. However, with the right dosage and the proper treatment course, it can help with female infertility. Clomiphene acts like estrogens. It interacts with the estrogen receptors in the hypothalamus and blocks these areas.

In this case, the brain receives a signal about the insufficient amount of the hormone estrone in the body. This causes an increase in the level of gonadotropins, which enhance the stimulation of the ovaries for the production of estrogens. This leads to the synthesis of the hormone in both the adrenal gland and in the ovaries. Increasing the level of estrogen is important for the process of fertilization.

In case a woman is aware of any health problems with hormones, she is recommended to inform her doctor in order to be examined. Clomid should be taken after the full medical examination if you want to benefit from its use.

Do I need a prescription for this drug?

Clomid is a drug that is sold under prescription in the USA and many European countries. Even if one can find the drug being sold without prescription online, it is better to get a professional consultation of a healthcare specialist before you use the medicine.

The drug was approved by the FDA and considered a safe medicine if it is taken according to the instructions. Women aren’t recommended to use the drug without being examined as nobody knows how the drug can influence your body as there is always a chance to face unwanted reactions due to the individual drug intolerability.

Is it safe to take Clomid over a long period of time?

Begin the reception from the fifth day of the menstrual cycle. Recommended dosing:

  • The first cycle – 50 mg once a day for 5 days. When ovulation occurs on subsequent cycles of therapy, an increase in dose is not required.
  • If there is no clinical effect in the first cycle, after 30 days, a second cycle of treatment with a daily dose of Clomid 100 mg should be prescribed for another 5 days.

The extension of the course of therapy or an increase in the dose in the second cycle should not be performed. For most women, a full course consisting of 3 cycles is effective. In the absence of ovulation there is no sense to continue the treatment. It can be not safe to take the drug longer than you have been prescribed to.
